Pulitzer Prize-Winning Writer to Speak in Sioux Falls

Art Cullen’s award-winning editorials described river and drinking water pollution caused by farm chemicals. Sioux Falls, SD: Art Cullen, winner of a 2017 Pulitzer Prize for editorial writing, will speak about his work and the subject of his prize-wining editorials at Augustana University at 7 pm on Thursday, September 13.The event is co-sponsored by the organization Friends of the Big Sioux River and Augustana University’s Center for Western Studies.Cullen, co-owner and editorial writer of the Storm Lake (Iowa) Times, received the Pulitzer Prize for a series of in-depth editorials about agricultural pollution in Iowa rivers and lakes.  A specific circumstance he described in his editorials was a lawsuit filed against agricultural interests regarding the harmful impacts of nitrate fertilizers on drinking water sources serving residents of Des Moines, Iowa.Cullen’s presentation, titled “A River Runs Toxic: A Warning From Iowa”, promises to be relevant to agriculture as it is practiced in South Dakota, including the impacts of farming practices on water quality in South Dakota’s rivers, streams and lakes.Mr. Cullen’s presentation will take place at Mikkelson Auditorium in the Froiland Science Center on the Augustana campus. The Froiland Science Center is located at the corner of 33rd Street and Summit Avenue, on the southeast corner of the Augustana campus in Sioux Falls.###
